This is a book of runes for beginners, and as such, I designed it to be a concise and inexpensive introduction. If you like what you see and the runes are for you, then you can extend your studies. If the runes aren’t your thing, then you haven’t invested much time or money. Call it a runic sampler if you will.
I hope you enjoy the book. My goal is to share something that’s very dear to me, and that has been part of our Northern culture for thousands of years – worthy of study.
What Reviewers are saying
First of all, this book is extremely well written both in content and in tone. It’s not by any means a difficult read and the author’s style is engaging without being overbearing. The rune spreads included in this book were great. The inclusion of the Anglo-Saxon rune poems is a nice addition. Hafskjold rune casting is not a system I’ve come across before, so I’m delighted at the information. It’s definitely something I will be studying. The description of the evolution of various runic rows is very thorough. Although I have not yet read the bibliography, Eoghan Odinsson seems to have been meticulous in citing his sources, and as far as I know, all of the information in this book is accurate… Overall, The Runes in 9 minutes is well worth reading.
It can be terribly difficult to faithfully and accurately present the runes in a brief fashion. With the large amount of controversy and historical confusion which surrounds the runes of the Elder Futhark, and indeed the actual methods of how these things were used by the Germanic cultures, the waters can be very muddy indeed.
This book is well put together, thorough, and does exactly what it advertises- it teaches you about the runes in a succinct and memorable fashion, providing references for all a beginner’s basic needs. It even includes a full list of bibliography and a suggested reading list.
I myself found the Hafskjold stav reading system of particular interest- inspired, functional, and unique divination methods are hard to find these days. For that alone, I would recommend this book. However, the entire book was well done.
I recommend The Runes in 9 Minutes for any beginner needing something to start out with, especially if they’re hoping to go further than just one book.
Short, to the point. Very clear and concise – you can, get an overview of the history, a quick tutorial on how to make your own, cast runes in a couple of different readings. Additionally there are quick easy to read and understand basic rune concepts on what each rune means, finally there are materials suggested for further learning. Okay so maybe it takes half an hour versus nine minutes … it will be time well spent putting yourself on a path on neverending learning.
